SPECIALISED FIRST AID TEACHING FOR CHILDREN IN SCHOOLS
SPECIALISED FIRST AID TEACHING FOR CHILDREN IN SCHOOLS
Learning with a Paediatrician allows for much greater scope, and the opportunity to ask wider questions. Other courses are often taught by nurses or resuscitation officers, with less specific training and knowledge. This makes ABC Paediatrics more flexible, and able to adapt more easily to the needs of our learners.
As well as teaching paediatric first aid, we take matters a step further and discuss what happens next, for example is hospital treatment is required. We discuss the signs and symptoms to look out for, taking knowledge beyond simple first aid.
Accidents and illnesses happen. Overcome the anxiety and worry when managing such situations by knowing best how to look after your child. Learn what to do initially, and when further medical attention is required.
An adult cannot be with their child at all times, especially as the child gets older and is allowed more freedom. Every child should have the know how and the ability to apply simple first aid, and perform resuscitation should the need arise. Accidents happen to parents and other adults as well as to children. Your child should have the confidence and knowledge to enable them to act correctly if the adult is the injured person.
so I am a Paediatrician at St George's Hospital in Tooting. I have been a paediatrician and a member of the Royal College of Paediatrics for over 15 years, and have worked in most of the London teaching hospitals.
I also have a Medical Education Teaching PG Certificate, and teach paediatrics to the medical students at St George's University Hospital, London.
I am also the mother of three children, which has given me an understanding and insight into parental concerns, and has taught me the best way to engage children practicing first aid.
The idea for ABC Paediatrics came when I realised that one of my children would soon be walking to school with just her friends. I struck me that should something untoward happen, none of them would have any idea of what to do. Of course, I could easily teach my daughter the necessary skills, but for her sake, I planned to teach her friends as well. This led me to the inevitable conclusion that every school child should know simple first aid and have resuscitation training, enabling them to act with confidence should the need arise.
